eVinyl Biography

Music has always been the primary thread in my friendship with Sandy.   Sandy has always had ideas and a goal of somehow contributing to the beauty.  Not as a musician but as promoter in some form.  Honestly, I guess I can say the same about myself.  About twenty years ago, before a blog was called a blog, I had a music blog.  I also had a concert series.  But then I grew up got myself a family and well . . . so much for the blog and concert  series.

But now I’m back at it.  Honestly, I really have no pedigree or credentials and I’m even not a good writer.  But I’ve got ideas and more importantly I’ve got an ear.  I’ve been turning friends on to amazing music my whole life.  More recently, my 26 year old daughter told me that I was a “sponge”.  I liked that.  I particularly liked hearing it from a millennial. Because music does transcend.  So that’s my credential, Camee says I’m a sponge.  So there you have it.

My top 5's are always changing.  Not that new things will necessarily surpass favorites.  But my mind changes hourly.

Such a beautiful album, it's mostly just four guitar players and bass. Mostly acoustic. It features some phenomenal acoustic slide by the brilliant Kelly Joe Phelps.
Album Name
Bruce Springsteen- Wild The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle

Unlike anything else Bruce has released. It was highly influenced by jazz pianist David Sancious. I love the romantic tales on side e. Incident, Rosie and NY City Serenade.

I call this album "holy shit" music. Because that's what I think when I listen to it. Many NRBQ fans are not even familiar with this era of the band. This is before Al Anderson replaced Steve Ferguson. While Al is awesome. Steve was amazing. They also featured Frankie Gadler on vocals. Wow, what a great singer. This album is amazing blue-eyed soul jazz. The musicians are so talented. They go places no one has gone since.

For me no doubt the best thing that Clapton was every involved in. Bluesy and soulful with so much great guitar. Clapton and Duane Allman dueling throughout the album. Definitely a classic.
Album Name
The Band - The Last Waltz
Comment
The Band was just so so good. The songs on their classic first two albums, Music From Big Pink and The Band were a revelation. All of a sudden jams and guitar indulgence lost favor among many artists. I think they inspired Clapton to break up Cream. He then asked to join The Band.

The Last Waltz was an amazing concert celebration of The Band, that included their friends and influences; Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Michael Bloomfield and more. And the best part is that they're all backed by The Band.

She's such a powerful artist. Very unique style. Perhaps an acquired taste. But definitely the real deal. For those unfamiliar start with Big Thief's album Two Hands or Adrianne's solo album Songs and Instrumentals. Some totally rocks out like "Not" on Two Hands. Some is simply delicate and beautiful like the whole Songs album.

Great songs. That's what it's all about. These guys can really rock. But they almost have some beautiful ballads. Though there's a lot darkness in the songs. My favorite album is Brighter Than Creations Dark. Though I think most fans would point to Decoration Day or The Dirty South. Those are great albums. Jason Isbell, who is now in the midst of a great solo career is on those and he wrote some stellar songs for them.
Artist Name
The Mountain Goats
Comment
The Mountain Goats features singer songwriter John Darnielle. In fact early Mountain Goats albums are simply John solo acoustic. He's an exceptional songwriter, very witty, very deep. I'd describe them as indy rock punk folk. I think that pretty much says it. My favorite albums are the upbeat Heretic's Pride and the exceptionally dark The Sunset Tree where John revisits his troubled youth.

One week when I was twelve years old, both Time and Newsweek were delivered to my home with Bruce on the cover. That was so weird. Then my sister brought home Born to Run. I was so taken by the romanticism, the wall of sound and the saxophone. I became a huge Bruce fan. That was before any of my classmates heard of him, even though I lived in New Jersey.

It took a long time for the next album to come out. So I went back in time and fell in love with Greetings from Asbury Park and especially The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle. I also fell in love with all the bootlegs that were available, both live and studio. I loved a bootleg called Fire on the Fingertips almost as much as the official releases.

Eventually, Bruce released Darkness On The Edge of Town. It was kind of a let down for me. And by and large, for awhile there, everything he put out was a bigger let down than the previous album (except for Nebraska) culminating in Tunnel of Love.

But then he released The Rising. It was what so many of us needed in the wake of 9/11. It was a revelation. And for me, Bruce was back in the swing of things. His latest album Letter To You has some really great songs, three of which were ironically written back during that sweet spot in the 70's that I love so much.

Greg had already been on my radar. Then one day the local NPR folk show played several songs from the new release Dream Cafe. I drove right to the record store. It was so melodic with such beautiful lyrics. For a good ten years or so, I was a Greg fanatic. Probably saw him about 50 times. He has a large and diverse catalog. His more recent albums have gotten bluesier and also more raw. And they're good. But I'd start with his 90's albums. Dream Cafe, Poet Game and Further In are amazing. Further In might be may all time favorite album. I happened to get an early copy of it on cassette and I quickly wore it out.

Thanks go out to my then fourteen year-old son Wyatt. He talked me into getting general admission on the floor. We got there early, got a pretty good number and got pretty darn close to the stage. But the best part was the set list. We knew that he'd be opening with New York City Serenade. He had been doing that all tour. But the he went into Blinded by the Light and Does This Bus Stop at 82nd St. He did four straight songs off his first album. Then he did four straight songs from his second album, after already opening with NY City Serenade. These were the songs that I fell in love with 40 years earlier. Many of which I had never heard live. It was amazing as the concert unfolded. Totally memorable and I was delighted to share it with my son.

What a great show. I'm a huge NRBQ fan. I came of age as a Q fan during the 80's when Big Al Anderson played the surly foil to madman Terry Adams. But NRBQ formed in the 60's when I was still a young kid. I had never seen the original guitarist Steve Ferguson. Sadly this concert was a tribute to Ferguson who what terminal cancer. Despite that he made the trip from Louisville. He was joined by the other two Q guitarists Al Anderson and Johnnie Spampinato. Also on stage with rock steady bass player Joey Spampinato, Stevie Ray Vaughn keyboard player Reese Wynans and amazing vocalist and madman Frankie Gadler. Gadler was an original vocalist with the early Q. What a singer. I'd never seen him before. I wish I knew what he'd been doing since he left NRBQ nearly 40 years earlier.

It was a truly amazing show. My buddy Paul and I were totally blown away. Gadler and the whole ensemble were amazing as they plowed though early Q classics.

Angry and visceral. The distorted guitar solo was picked by one NPR reviewer as the best guitar solo that year (2019, I think)

Perhaps the most personal song I've ever hear. Lithuania reflects on the murder of Dan's grandparents, uncles and aunt by the Nazi's in Lithuania and the effect that it's had on him. Keep the box of Kleenex nearby.
