8 yearsMusic has always been the primary thread in my friendship with Sandy. Sandy has always had ideas and a goal of somehow contributing to the beauty. Not as a musician but as promoter in some form. Honestly, I guess I can say the same about myself. About twenty years ago, before a blog was called a blog, I had a music blog. I also had a concert series. But then I grew up got myself a family and well . . . so much for the blog and concert series.
But now I’m back at it. Honestly, I really have no pedigree or credentials and I’m even not a good writer. But I’ve got ideas and more importantly I’ve got an ear. I’ve been turning friends on to amazing music my whole life. More recently, my 26 year old daughter told me that I was a “sponge”. I liked that. I particularly liked hearing it from a millennial. Because music does transcend. So that’s my credential, Camee says I’m a sponge. So there you have it.
My top 5's are always changing. Not that new things will necessarily surpass favorites. But my mind changes hourly.
The Last Waltz was an amazing concert celebration of The Band, that included their friends and influences; Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Michael Bloomfield and more. And the best part is that they're all backed by The Band.
It took a long time for the next album to come out. So I went back in time and fell in love with Greetings from Asbury Park and especially The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle. I also fell in love with all the bootlegs that were available, both live and studio. I loved a bootleg called Fire on the Fingertips almost as much as the official releases.
Eventually, Bruce released Darkness On The Edge of Town. It was kind of a let down for me. And by and large, for awhile there, everything he put out was a bigger let down than the previous album (except for Nebraska) culminating in Tunnel of Love.
But then he released The Rising. It was what so many of us needed in the wake of 9/11. It was a revelation. And for me, Bruce was back in the swing of things. His latest album Letter To You has some really great songs, three of which were ironically written back during that sweet spot in the 70's that I love so much.
It was a truly amazing show. My buddy Paul and I were totally blown away. Gadler and the whole ensemble were amazing as they plowed though early Q classics.
